- Available in a range of colours, styles and species
- Is proven to be good for your health
Each wood species has its own unique character and depending on which one you choose, there may be several grades available. Grades impact the cost and final look of your timber floors.

Janka scale
Another important aspect to consider when choosing solid timber flooring is the hardness or strength of the wood which is why the Janka Hardness Scale was developed by wood researchers. This implies how well a piece of wood will withstand normal wear and strain, such as scratching and denting. Hardness is measured according to the Janka scale, where the higher the Janka rating, the harder the wood. For more information on the Janka Scale call our store today to speak to one of our experts.

Solid Timber Flooring Grades
Grading by visual methods is just a technique of classifying the boards according to the size and quantity of the characteristics. Boards that have fewer, smaller elements are grouped into one grade, while those that have more, bigger features, are grouped into another grade. Grades are summarised according to Australian Standard AS 2796 and describe the overall character that will be achieved.
- Select Grade (Clean or Light Feature) – This is the cleanest grade of timber. Features or natural discolouration do not dominate. Boards may have uniform short or narrow gum veins.
- Standard and Better (Light Feature) – Combines the features of select and standard grades to provide a floor with slightly more character.
- Standard Grade (Moderate Feature) – This grade contains moderately featured boards that may include gum veins, knots and natural discolouration.
- Feature and Better – Combines the features of feature grade and standard grade.
- Feature Grade (Full Feature, High Feature or natural grade) – This is similar to standard grade but with more dominant features.
- Economy Grade (Rustic Grade) – This may have large tight knots and the most colour variation, but has the structural integrity of a feature grade floor.
Every board of flooring receives a solid timber floor grade. It is beneficial to specify and inform you of what to anticipate in terms of the quality of hardwood items that will be provided. Visit our showroom for a more detailed explanation and to see samples of each wood grade.
